Yesterday, the missionaries set out to Providence Place to spread joy to people they meet and encounter. What has inspired them to do this apostolic work was from Pope Francis’ exhortation Evangelii Gaudium or The Joy of the Gospel.
“The life of the Church should always reveal clearly that God takes the initiative, that “he has loved us first” (1 Jn 4:19) and that he alone “gives the growth” (1 Cor 3:7). This conviction enables us to maintain a spirit of joy in the midst of a task so demanding and challenging that it engages our entire life. God asks everything of us, yet at the same time he offers everything to us.” (12)”
They gave flowers to mall goers, asked for their prayer intentions, passed on motivational Scriptures, sang happy songs while on the escalator, and stuck Post-Its with inspirational quotes on mirrors and bathroom doors with the hope of uplifting someone who comes across these notes. The missionaries also did a flash mob performance as the culminating activity.
“It’s really lovely to see the beautiful smiles on the faces of people we’ve encountered,” one of the missionaries shared. “It is really Christ working in us as we spread the joy of His love to others–to people we’ve never met. And it is also our friendship with each other, knowing that we are not alone in this mission of spreading joy, that also gave us the courage to be bold and go up to people we don’t know,” another shared.
It is truly His providence that these missionaries were able to spread joy that day! Praise be to God.
